What is a dental emergency?
It's any urgent oral health problem--something which needs professional attention right away. Perhaps it impacts your personal appearance, your speech, or oral functions such as biting and chewing. Or, you may be experiencing intense pain or profuse bleeding. Dental emergencies may include:
- An avulsed, or knocked out, tooth
- Fractured or laterally displaced tooth
- Cracked crown, denture or filling
- Dental sensitivity to heat, cold or sugar
- Swollen jaw or gums
- Broken orthodontic appliance
Things you can do
If you knock out a tooth, try to replant it roots-down into the empty socket. Alternately, save it between your cheek and gums, or place it in a covered container with water or milk. Be sure to rinse it with clear water first, but do not remove any remaining soft tissue. Your dentist may be able to save your tooth if you see him quickly.
If you cut your lips, tongue, gums or other soft tissues, apply direct pressure with a clean cloth or 4x4 gauze. Ice the area to reduce swelling, and go to the hospital emergency room if bleeding doesn't stop within 15 minutes.
A cracked crown, denture or tooth compromises appearance and function. Take the pieces to Dr. Bourne. Often, a cracked or chipped tooth repairs well with application of composite resin or placement of a new porcelain crown.
When a tooth throbs with pain, take over the counter acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Apply a warm compress to your jaw. Get an appointment at Eagle Dental as you may have a cavity or dental abscess.
